The Future of Software Development
What's in store for 2018?
As with any industry, the beginning of a new year is traditionally a time for the experts to look at where we've been and provide their best forecasts for where we are headed next. In this SD Times article, Christina Cardoza reports on where software development is going in 2018.
The answers are as varied as the individuals that were interviewed. Not surprisingly, these answers also depended on the type of business each thought leader was involved in. Security experts believe that developers will need to focus on developing even more secure code, while those in the data fields expect real-time data processing and cloud services will be a priority.

Discussion Questions/Activities
- Review the concept of software development with the class. You might consider discussing the ways software development has evolved over time, such as the change from using the waterfall model to agile development.
- Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to locate a recent article or multimedia post about the role of software development in a specific industry, such as security, data management, manufacturing, etc. Each group should create a brief presentation to share and explain their findings to the class.
- As an individual project, ask students to locate a recent article that explains the concepts of software development for individuals that are new to the field. The student should write a brief synopsis of the article and determine whether the article was successful in its attempt. Was it easy to understand? Did it introduce and explain new concepts clearly? Did it cover most of the basics? Was there anything that should have been explained but wasn't?
